Tables and Figures
Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses. References cited only in tables or figure legends should be numbered in accordance with the sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or figure.

Review policy and timelines

  • Immediate notification if submitted successfully.
  • Notification within 3 weeks if not accepted for further review.
  • Notification within 3 months if the article has been accepted for publication, if revisions are required or if the article has been rejected by both reviewers.
  • Publication within 6 months after submission.

Note: Manuscripts are initially examined by editorial staff and are sent by the Editor to independent reviewers who are not informed of the identity of the author(s). When publication in the article's original form is not recommended, the reviewers' comments (without the identity of the reviewer being disclosed) may be passed to the corresponding author and may include suggested revisions. Manuscript not approved for publication will not be returned, in any format.

Production policy and timelines
As soon as the Editor accepts the article for publication, the editorial staff will copy-edit your manuscript; they will return it to you for review. This will be the final stage at which you may make content changes. At a later stage, the editorial staff will send you one set of galley proofs, at which time you will have 48 hours to mark any typographical errors. If you do not respond by fax, email, or telephone within 48 hours the editors will assume acceptance of the galley, on your part and proceed with the publication process. We may not be able to incorporate your corrections into the printed version of your manuscript after failure to respond to proofreading request. Please ensure that you frequently visit your author home page to assess the progress of your manuscript, or contact the Title Operations Coordinator at submissions@sajs.co.za

Enquiries: Potential contributors are invited, before formal submission, to enquire whether or not a particular article would be of interest, or to obtain advice about the way in which a manuscript should be prepared for submission.

Operations coordinator contact: Title Operations Coordinator, email: submissions@sajs.co.za
Editor-in-chief contact:
Prof Michael Cherry, email: mic@sun.ac.za

Format of compulsory cover page: Provide a short title of 50 characters or less and indicate briefly the significance of the work being reported. State the full name(s) and title(s) of the author(s) with the position, affiliation and contact details (postal address, email, telephone and cell number) of each author. Please identify the author to whom all correspondence should be addressed.

For manuscripts with multiple authors, proof of approval to submit the manuscript to the journal, signed by all authors, should be attached and uploaded as a supplementary file – this document can be downloaded from the journal website. A student should normally be listed as the principal author on any multi-authored manuscripts derived from the student’s research, dissertation or thesis.

Include a paragraph briefly summarising the nature of the contribution made by each of the authors listed, along the lines of the following: Author contributions: J.K. was the project leader, L.M.N. and A.B. were responsible for experimental and project design. L.M.N. performed most of the experiments. P.R. made conceptual contributions and S.T., U.V. and C.D. performed some of the experiments. S.M. and V.C. prepared the samples and calculations were performed by C.S., J.K. and U.V. wrote the manuscript.

Authors are encouraged to provide the names and full contact details (including email) of two or three potential referees to evaluate the work (referees should not be people with whom the researcher has recently collaborated or published). Lastly, a list containing the number of pages of the manuscript and the number of tables, figures and/or other supplementary material should accompany the submission.

Bio-statement: We also ask that you upload a brief biographical note (entered into the ‘Bio statement’ box during the submission process). This note will appear online in our ‘About the Author’ section should your article be published with us.

Author fees:
This journal charges the following author fees.
Galley Change Fees (GCF) per hour: 350.00 (ZAR)
Authors will be given the opportunity to revise and approve the text of the accepted manuscript in the final phase of copyediting. After author approval the manuscript will go to design layout. The author will be asked to proofread the final galleys before going to publishing. Proofreading is intended to correct typesetting mistakes and not to introduce new changes to the text; as such changes will require new layout of the pages. The publisher will charge GFC to the author, based on the cost incurred to make such changes.
